This group study project is being led by radar pangaean, and kicked off approx. May 1st. This project is targeted for relatively inexperienced Mac OS programmers. Each participant will use the Power Plant framework (as provided by Metrowerks in the CodeWarrior development product) to produce a simple but meaningful Mac OS application. Unlike the usual MOST Project Teams (which are supposed to consist of different individuals performing each of the various roles in the process of developing an app), each member of THIS team will fill all of the roles as he/she defines, designs, develops, debugs, and documents a complete Mac OS application of her/his own choosing.
I make no claims for overwhelming expertise in C++, CodeWarrior, or Power Plant. I have learned each of these elements of this course myself through self study using the documentation provided by Metrowerks and one text on C++, and there are significant gaps in my knowledge - especially in the area of the underlying implementation of C++ . I have produced about a dozen individual 'local use only' apps with PP over the last three years. They perform the functions i expected of them, are easily used by any proficient Mac user, and they don't crash. If that's the level of quality you need to meet, then i can show you how to get there. Beyond that... well... maybe we can all help each other get a better final polish on a PP application by working together. What i do bring to this exercise as its leader that IS guaranteed is that i will work patiently with each of the participants of this exercise to share what i have learned, and will do my best to encourage you to help each other.
I can make Power Plant work, but i don't claim to be able to make it sing. Participants are not to consider my approach to any aspect of the materials covered in this class as above questioning and are encouraged to suggest improvements to any process or material that i present. I have other volunteer mentors who will monitor the mailing list to make sure i don't mislead anyone and all students are urged to speak up as well if they believe i am saying something that is wrong. My ego will not suffer for being corrected and i don't want wrong information sitting uncorrected any longer than necessary. On the other side of the fence, i hope that all students will feel equally comfortable asking questions that relate to this exercise without fear of looking stupid.
Those who wish to participate in this group learning exercise should read our rules of etiquette and then follow the instructions listed in the "Participation" section of the site. Each student is expected to assist with documenting their work for The MOST's subsequent use.
