The Essence of C Course

History and Credit

K.J. Bricknell originally wrote the materials used for this course as a companion reference material for his text "Macintosh C: A Hobbiest's Guide to Programming the Mac in C" (which itself is used as the primary course materials for the MacOS Core Programming Course offered by the MOST). When we started offering the "Mac C" course, some students requested access to the "Essence of C" document that comprises THIS course to help them switch from Pascal to C. Bill Michael worked with K.J. to provide a HTML version of K.J.'s original materials and we hosted them here at the MOST.

K.J. has subsequently updated his "Mac C" materials to accommodate Pascal users as well, but we still host these C langauge reference materials for the sake of anyone wanting web based access to a this type of information.

Participation

"Essence of C" is a course only in the loosest sense of the word. The source materials are written to serve as a reference guide to the syntax of the language, not to teach the points of how to program effectively in C. We plan to augment this material someday with a tutorial type approach, but at our current rate i'd say that this won't occur until roaches are an intelligent life form. In the interim, we publish the reference guide on the web and support students in the course in their efforts to learn programming Mac OS computers in C by providing mentors to answer related questions on the MOST-C mailing list. Anyone subscribed to that list is a participant in this course. We don't publish a list of participants for this course.
