MacOS Core Programming Course
Enrollment

Do you need to enroll?

The primary course materials for the MacOS Core Course were produced by their author (K.J. Bricknell) - before The MOST even existed - to provide self-study materials for anyone who wished to learn to program MacOS computers using the C language. While researching to produce similar materials for use in providing mentored courses, participants in The MOST discovered K.J.'s text at the Ambrosia site (it has subsequently been moved when Ambrosia decided not to host such materials). It was easy to see that his materials were perfectly suited to serve as course materials for our proposed net-based course.

However, the materials obviously still stand perfectly well for the purpose for which K.J. originally produced them, i.e. as a textbook - with examples - designed for independent self-study on the part of the student. Those who are comfortable operating with that level of independence in learning the MacOS don't need to enroll with The MOST to use K.J.'s materials. Just pop over to the Ambrosia web site and download them in one of the formats that K.J. has made available and have at it!

On the other hand, some people prefer easy access to mentoring or other students for discussion or clarification on points that might seem difficult when first encountered. We have mailing lists that are targetted just for the use of our students to discuss their course-related problems and the effectiveness of these lists is the primary benefit currently offered by The MOST. Some people want access to additional study exercizes and self-tests to help them assess their progress. Feedback from our pilot class tells us this would help many students. These two aspects are planned as MOST-provided enhancements to this course, but are NOT yet in place. Some people just like to interact with others that are interested in the same exciting new technologies that they are learning. Whatever your reason for wanting to participate in a group study exercize of K.J.'s materials rather than just go it on your own, The MOST provides a place for you to do so.

Since K.J.'s materials DO stand so well on their own, we don't know if it's really worth the effort associated with supporting this course. Right now we have about 180 students subscribed to the class mailing list, but no way of knowing how many of them are actually benefitting from our efforts. We will be implementing a web-based enrollment and status reporting system as time permits. Once it's in place we will require all students to use it to enroll and keep us apprised of their progress at least every two months. Until it's in place, please follow the instructions below to enroll.

NOTE: Another reminder that there is no reason to enroll with The MOST if you plan to use K.J.'s materials exclusively for self-study purposes.

How to enroll

Note: Anyone who uses any aspect of The MOST is asked to subscribe to the MOST-Announce mailing list. You may subscribe manually or use our web-based mailing list command processor to subscribe if you aren't already subscribed to this list. Note the part of the instructions that explain that subscribing to any MOST list requires you to respond to the email you will receive after sending your subscription request. You are not subscribed to the list until you receive the second email confirming your subscription.

Most group discussions for the MOST MacOS Core Programming Course take place on the MOST-MacOS-Core mailing list. You may subscribe manually or use our web-based mailing list command processor. Note the part of the instructions that explain that subscribing to any MOST list requires you to respond to the email you will receive after sending your subscription request. You are not subscribed to the list until you receive the second email confirming your subscription.

Until we have our automated data collection facility in place we take enrollment information on the class discussion list. Submitting it serves to introduce you to the other class members as well as provide info for our membership listing. After your subscription is confirmed, you may formally enroll in the class by simply posting the following information to the MOST-MacOS-Core mailing list:

This information will be posted in the membership list unless you explicitly ask that it not be posted.

Privacy concerns and lurking on the mailing list

Subscribing to any of The MOST's lists will make your email address available to any other subscriber to the list. This DOES present some possibility that spammers will use the facilities of The MOST to gather addresses. There's no practical way to prevent that without making the information inaccessible to our legitimate members also, and we have decided to accept the situation as is. If you don't want your address available to people who may check our subscriber list then you can't BE a subscriber. That's about all there is to that aspect of this issue.

The rest of the information we ask for above IS subject to whether you choose to submit it. While we MUCH prefer to have valid information about who our students are and what tools they use, we want this information to help us provide the courses more effectively, not to provide marketing information to anyone else. If you don't want any aspect of the information about you - OTHER than your email address - posted to the net, then don't submit it. We won't drop lurkers from the mailing list and will accept as much or as little of the requested information as any individual student wishes to provide at the time of their enrollment.

Disenrolling from the course

If you complete the course materials or have decided that you are not going to continue with your studies, post a message to the MOST-MacOS-Core mailing list stating that you are withdrawing from the course. It would be appreciated if you would state why, but that is optional. AFTER you post the fact that you are withdrawing from the course (whether you provide a reason or not), then unsubscribe from the MOST-MacOS-Core mailing list. You may unsubscribe manually or use our web-based mailing list command processor.
